The first step on the road to self acceptance is realizing what your accomplishments and positives are and building on them. It is often the case that people lacking in self-confidence will be quite negative in their approach to themselves and their lives, and this is the first thing that has to change if an acceptance of the person's self-worth is going to be achieved. There are simple ways to get to this point of acceptance – be realistic, be optimistic, and realise that you can't change everything straight away.
First of all, take stock of the good things you have in your life. You may be in a great job (even if you are unhappy with your performance); you may have a fantastic education behind you; you may have a wonderful partner or family that supports you. You may be proud of particular aspects of your appearance (even if you're not fond of others). Whatever bright spots you can find, focus on them! Don't let yourself become bogged down in the negatives, as this rarely achieves anything.
Secondly, find ways to remind yourself of the positives you've highlighted. Post-it notes with happy messages, notes left on your bathroom mirror, or perhaps a family photo on your desk at work can make a huge difference in your day. It's important that you find ways to make yourself smile and appreciate the good aspects of your life. You may even consider purchasing some inspirational audio tapes or CDs to listen to in the car, or some self-improvement books to read before bed. Find the method that works for you and stick with it.
