Having self worth – why is it important? |
Self-worth is a term which is thrown around quite casually by pop-psychologists, talk-show hosts and self-help authors, but many people simply don't appreciate just how important it can be to have a belief in your value as a human being. Perhaps this misconception of self-worth is due to the fact that it is hard to define, impossible to guarantee, and invisible to the naked eye. Without this important belief in oneself, people may feel listless, without direction or purpose, and unhappy with who they are and how they appear. This lack of confidence may effect the person's performance at work, their behaviour at home, and their relationships with friends, family and co-workers. It can also lead to over-eating, poor hygiene, and more serious emotional problems such as alcoholism, drug or gambling addiction, and in some instances financial strife.
It's funny to think that such a wishy-washy concept like self confidence can have such a big impact on a person's life, but it's been proven time and time again to be the root cause of many larger and more complex problems. It is generally accepted that people who feel confident in their abilities (both socially and in a work environment), are proud of their appearance, and who are accepting of other people's relationships with them will fare far better at home, work, and at life in general. It doesn't matter what your age is, whether you are male or female, or whether you are rich are poor – having a sense of self-worth is one of the best ways you can arm yourself for surviving day-to-day life.
